Lisbon enchants with street songs, fascinates with legends and mysteries, and inspires with landscapes worthy of a movie. That’s what directors Peter R. Hunt, Bille August, Louis Leterrier, and Yorgos Lanthimos say, who fell in love with the city of seven hills and chose it to star in their action, suspense, romance, drama, and science fiction plots.

All set? Join us on a cinematic journey where Lisbon is almost the protagonist. Take 1: action!

On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)

We can't talk about action movies without mentioning this British production, part of the famous James Bond franchise. Known by the original title "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," this classic film portrays the mission of the MI6 secret agent to locate the head of the criminal organization SPECTRE.

Shot at the Hotel Palácio do Estoril in 1969, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" also came to life in the beautiful settings of Arrábida, Palmela, Guincho, and, of course, Lisbon. The Lisbon landscapes were the backdrop for several scenes, and the film's locations were revisited in 2019 when George Lazenby returned to Portugal for the 50th anniversary of the film's release. The Australian actor who played James Bond co-starred in the film alongside British actress Diana Rigg, his wife.

Gather the family, prepare the popcorn, and let yourself be carried away by a session of adventure, action, and suspense with Lisbon as the backdrop.

The House of the Spirits (1993)

Adapted from the novel by Isabel Allende, the 1993 film "The House of the Spirits", of 1993, tells the story of the Chilean Trueba family throughout the 20th century. The saga reflects the revolutionary moment in Chile, which ended with the military coup of 1973, and deals with the union of a simple man and a young woman endowed with paranormal powers.

Lisbon welcomed the story with open arms and appeared in several settings, for example, with São Bento recreating Santiago de Chile. The capital caught the attention of director Bille August, who was accompanied by big names like Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Antonio Banderas, and Glenn Close.

An impactful film, framed by the city of seven hills, that you must not miss!

Night Train to Lisbon (2013)

Adapted from a novel by Swiss writer Pascal Mercier, the film "Night Train to Lisbon" tells the story of a Swiss Latin teacher who leaves his job and travels to Lisbon to learn more about the doctor-writer and aristocrat Amadeu de Prado, an opponent of Salazar's regime.

Like "The House of the Spirits," by the same director, this feature film also included Lisbon in the script. This time, with the camera focused on the Rossio and Santa Apolónia train stations.

Starring Jeremy Irons, the film also featured Portuguese actors such as Nicolau Breyner and Beatriz Batarda.

Romance, mystery, and suspense are not lacking in this cinematic creation that puts Lisbon at the center of the scene.

Furious Speed X (2023)

After years of riding the world's most challenging roads, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) seeks a quiet life with Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and their son. But then Dante (Jason Momoa), the vengeful son of drug lord Reyes, arrives to challenge the couple's peace and set off an action-packed plot.

Featuring the original cast, the latest film in the ‘Fast X’ saga featured two special appearances: Portuguese actress Daniela Melchior and the city of Lisbon.

Shot in the UK, Italy and Portugal, the film reached the cities of Vila Real, Viseu and Lisbon before arriving in cinemas. The urban and historical settings of the Portuguese capital mark moments of pure adrenaline and action, not to be missed.

Poor Things (2023)

Based on the homonymous work by Alasdair Gray ("Poor Things"), "Poor Things" presents a poetic and unusual narrative that explores the existence of the peculiar Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), raised by the unorthodox scientist Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). With an insatiable curiosity about the world around her and a knack for defying social norms, Bella's first stop is Lisbon. And what is this Lisbon? A futuristic, fantastical, and almost unrecognizable Lisbon.

The city of seven hills is depicted with flying trams and exaggerated contrasts, inviting the audience to awaken all their senses in a fantastic Portuguese capital.

There are plenty of pastéis de nata, Portuguese guitar, and the unmistakable voice of Carminho.

Discover Lisbon like never before, through the eyes of Bella Baxter.
