Street Art Tour in Lisbon

April 11 2023
Een bezoek aan Lissabon
The city of seven hills has secrets that are in plain sight. The Lisbon viewpoints are one of them. And urban art too. Bordalo II, André Mano, Vanessa Teodoro, Mário Belém, RAF or Tamara Alves are just a few names that talentedly paint the city with colors, patterns and textures, sharing messages in a fascinating way.

Today, we invite you to take an alternative tour of what is one of the world capitals of urban art. Find out what to visit on your next stay in Lisbon!

″Abelha″, Lx Factory

If urban art had a home, this would certainly be the Lx Factory, an old factory complex that came to life in 2008 as a “factory” of creativity and experiences. That's why we decided to start our tour of Lisbon's street art in the Alcântara neighborhood.

Around here, every wall and corner has a vibrant story to tell, starting with the giant bee made from rubbish and recycled material at the entrance, created by artist Bordalo II. Let yourself be surprised here!

Entrecampos Elevator

The next creation is for those who like black and white. After Alcântara, we leave for Entrecampos… by elevator!

Arriving at the Elevador de Entrecampos is like entering a game of graphic patterns and figurative elements. The author is Vanessa Teodoro, a South African artist based in Lisbon, who was inspired by pop art and African patterns to offer us a sui generis work of art. The choice of colors – black and white – generates greater visual harmony, giving this composition a unique identity. Learn more here!

Mural Simone de Oliveira and Paulo de Carvalho, Avenida de Roma

We continue our route on one of the Avenidas Novas de Lisboa, in the neighborhood of Alvalade, Avenida de Roma.

Already know mural by Simone de Oliveira on the façade of building number 1 on Rua António Patrício? Painted by one of his grandchildren, architect and graffiti artist André Mano, this work reflects the special relationship he has with his grandmother, as well as being a well-deserved tribute to one of the greatest figures in Portuguese music.

And speaking of honoring Portuguese musicians, the person who performs a “duet” with Simone de Oliveira on the corner between Rua António Patrício and Avenida de Roma is Paulo de Carvalho immortalized on a 120 m2 high mural, painted by the artist Tamara Alves.

Two suggestions not to be missed next to your family hotel in Lisbon, the Hotel Roma!

Lisbon Menina e Moça, Avenida Rio de Janeiro

Strolling along the Portuguese pavement towards Avenida Rio de Janeiro, just 15 minutes away from Avenida de Roma, you will find the Library Manoel Chaves Caminha and its beautiful colorful façade (and flowery), in honor of the incomparable fado singer Carlos do Carmo.

By the artist Mário Belém, the artwork Lisboa Menina e Moça is portrayed in the form of a female figure sitting on a pile of books. In this creation, are still present: a Vinyl by Carlos do Carmo, a manjerico, Santo António, monuments, trams and even a crow, representing the city. Discover this work here!

Talude, Alta de Lisboa

Here is the greatest work of urban art in Europe made by a single artist! It has 2,800 m2, almost all the colors of the spectrum and makes everyone happy who rests their eyes on it. The guest artist was Rui Alexandre Ferreira, better known as RAF, who managed to give new life to a pre-existing urban space – a slope – in Alta de Lisboa.

An unmissable work that 4 years later continues to surprise anyone who sees it!

Lince Ibérico, Parque das Nações

We chose to end our street art itinerary next to the Tagus and in the company of an Iberian lynx of titanic dimensions. Made with pieces of garbage and ecopoints, by the artist Bordalo II, this endangered species arrived in the East to make the city think about the challenge of the climate emergency.

This lynx is joined by a series of other animals “on the loose” in Lisbon. A frog on Maintenance Street, a monkey on Xabregas Street and even a fox in a derelict building on Avenida 24 de Julho are just a few examples.

Now that you know what to do in Lisbon, how about anticipating the summer by discovering 5 unmissable bars in the Alvalade neighborhood?

We look forward to seeing you at our 3-star hotel in Lisbon! Rückkehr
