5 Fado Houses in Lisbon You Can't Miss!

Today's itinerary? It's wherever Fado takes us. From Bairro Alto to Marvila, passing through Alfama, we invite you to stroll hand in hand with nostalgia. Swayed by the Portuguese guitar, we listen to those who sing with feeling, wearing a shawl over their shoulders and emotion in their voices.
Declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, Fado is one of the most genuine ways to feel Lisbon. An experience you never forget and always want to repeat, especially if enjoyed in the best Fado houses in the city. Join us in silence, for the Fado is about to begin!
1. A Severa, Bairro Alto
"Quem vier visitar o Bairro Alto/ P'ra ouvir esta canção sempre sincera/ Não poderá passar sem dar um salto/ Ao Restaurante Típico A Severa". This is how this place welcomes us, with authenticity, traditional cuisine, and… a welcome march!
Located in one of the capital's most famous neighborhoods, A Severa is one of the oldest Fado houses in Lisbon. Opened in 1955 to give life to some of the greatest voices of Fado, it has been managed by the same family for four generations. With an intimate atmosphere, delicious snacks, and traditional Fado, there's no better place to start this Fado tour of Lisbon. Discover it here!
2. Clube Lisboa Amigos do Fado, Marvila
“Vamos pedir o favor/ Espero que não levem a mal/ Quando as luzes se apagarem/ Pedimos silêncio tota”. This is the request made by the sign at the entrance of Clube Lisboa Amigos do Fado. A school and a Fado house, this "Portuguese corner" is located in Lisbon's most creative neighborhood. With a discreet location, Clube Lisboa Amigos do Fado is a place where you can enjoy snacks like grilled chorizo or kale soup, all while listening to amateur and renowned Fado.
A mandatory stop, this club has trained hundreds of Fado singers and witnessed the voices of Fado legends like Amália Rodrigues, Alfredo Marceneiro, Mariza, and Sara Correia, a proud daughter of the neighborhood.

3. Parreirinha de Alfama, Alfama
Once a coal shop and tavern, Parreirinha de Alfama is known for crossing paths with Amália Rodrigues, Alfredo Marceneiro, Berta Cardoso, Lucília do Carmo, Mariana Silva, Celeste Rodrigues, among many others. Dedicated to Fado since 1950, this house offers a meeting of generations, where good food and good Fado come together to feed the souls of those who long for the past.
Founded by Fado singer Argentina Santos, Parreirinha has Chef Jaqueline Silva at the helm in the kitchen, assisted by Aicha Elhayany.
A place not to be missed, here.
4. O Faia, Bairro Alto
If you're looking for a historic Fado house in Bairro Alto, you just need to find O Faia. Founded by Fado singer Lucília do Carmo, mother of Carlos do Carmo, in 1947, this place is a reference in Lisbon's nightlife. Within its walls, O Faia has hosted Fado icons like Alfredo Marceneiro, Tristão da Silva, Fernando Maurício, Ada de Castro, Beatriz da Conceição, Vasco Rafael, Camané, and Ricardo Ribeiro.
Today, in addition to a delicious codfish and egg in a bread stew with figs and pennyroyal, you can find yourself in the company of admirable personalities, like Lenita Gentil, António Rocha, Sara Correia, Maura Airez, and Beatriz Felício.
Discover O Faia here!
5. Tasca do Chico, Bairro Alto
A meeting point for Fado lovers, Tasca do Chico first saw the light of day in 1996. Once a storage space for sausages and olives, it quickly transformed into a shrine for vadio Fado (a more spontaneous, improvised form of Fado).
As for Chico, or rather Francisco Gonçalves, he is a constant presence at this venue, which has been on the agenda of internationally known figures like Mariza or the late Anthony Bourdain.
And if professional musicians, after their concerts, like to come here, those who love Fado will also want to take a look, whether at this spot or at the new tavern that Chico opened on Rua dos Remédios, in Alfama. Discover it here!
After listening to Fado, treat your family to a stay at Hotel Roma. With over 40 years connecting the Avenidas Novas to the world, our family hotel in Lisbon offers the best leisure experience, amidst the tranquility of the Alvalade neighborhood and the hustle and bustle of the city.
